Hand to Cloth:  Draping a Personal Garment

In those first moments, when you touch cloth…….so much is possible.  Working directly on the dressform invites your experience directly through your fingers. Trusting what you know becomes your base (an invisible structure) for this new, more intuitive  level of sewing. Diane

Guest Teacher, Christine Mayer -                                   www.intothelight.de

Christine's Design Philosophy
Berlin-based fashion designer Christine Mayer has built a fashion career on re-purposing clothing and breathing new life into old garments.   She is a pioneer of three-dimensional free draping with fabric. This method is an art form Christine adapted and developed from her studies in classical Japanese drapery.
When it comes to clothing design, Christine’s style is recognizable for its collage aesthetics; where pattern and fabric constantly interrupt each other’s spaces. “Material that has been marked by life” are one of Christine’s biggest inspirations.

IN THE STUDIO WITH CHRISTINE-
Working directly onto a dressform Christine will share how to artfully drape and stitch to create original clothing with a comfortable fit. This fresh and liberating way of making clothes brings with it a new set of rules which has far more in common with sculpting than dressmaking.
The aim in Christine’s teachings is to learn and experience a new way of working with fabrics. It’s about a conscious opening that moves away from the two-dimensional space, towards a unique three-dimensionality.
With a new understanding and the principles of working three-dimensionally, you’ll enjoy the process of allowing your garments to evolve.

In this workshop, you will learn the art of combining, cutting, rethinking and recreating . Diane & Christine will be sharing their process working on a collection of spring shirts. Each participant will work on their own creation, developing a personal treasure by up-cycling and collaging their materials.

  • Sharing our design skills, we will guide you in the process and teach you the art of working directly on the dressform.  We are looking forward to supporting each participant in exploring personal potential, growing and expressing your design eye.  This workshop is your opportunity to explore & create a new vocabulary with your sewing skills.

Your textile sewing experience is now at your fingers tips…..
